Gutters systems can last 20-30 years, but that doesn’t mean they’ll never need repairs. Eventually, every gutter system needs repairs: fasteners come loose, corrosion causes holes, lengths of gutter can sag, accidents can bend gutters, and debris from storms can batter them.

The first step to extending the life of your gutters is regular gutter repair. If they are older than 30 years or the damage is significant and extreme then it’s more cost effective to replace your gutters.

The main factor in determining whether to repair or replace your gutters will be extent of damage. If you only have one or two trouble spots, they should be easy to fix, but if multiple sections of your gutters are giving you problems or you have tried repairing a problem before and it keeps coming back, you should save yourself the headache and replace your gutters.

Call a reputable gutter repair service professional to look at your gutters and give you an assessment. Like us! Yes we do install new gutters but you won’t hear a sales pitch for that when we come over. We’ll look at your gutters and give you the cost of gutter repair and a gutter replacement cost. Then you can make an informed choice for yourself.

If you just want gutter repair this seems like a good job for a handyman. But gutter systems can be complicated. You really should bring in an expert in gutter repair to do the work. That way you know for sure it’s done right.

Common Gutter Repair Problems

Here are the most likely causes for gutter damage and how to repair them.

1. Blockage

Your gutters can be clogged with organic debris from trees or from unnatural materials like dog toys thrown on the roof. If you notice water marks under your gutters or pooling water and mildew near your foundation, your gutters are probably overflowing and simply need cleaning. Your downspout can also be blocked so those need to be checked for full flow capacity.

2. Sagging Gutters

If you notice your gutters leaning down or pulling away from the house, you need to act quickly to avoid rotting fascia board and total gutter collapse. The reason for your gutter sag is most likely the result of a broken hanger or spike. Sometimes it’s so full of muck and standing water that it can no longer hold up under all the added weight. We will inspect the problem area and replace broken hardware as necessary.

Your gutter might also be sagging due to excess weight from debris that needs cleaning out. Or perhaps from undue stress such as leaning a ladder on your gutters, which you should never do. If there is permanent warping, you may need to replace that section of gutter.

3. Leaks

If your gutters are not blocked and water is still escaping, you have a leak. A leak sometimes opens at the joints between sections of gutter, which can simply be resealed. Other times a leak develops through a crack in the gutters from corrosion or other damage. You can patch these leaks, but once a weak spot is established, it will likely be a recurring problem.

Holes can be caused by corrosion. The corrosion usually forms when gutters have not been cleaned. But they can also be caused by loose fasteners or joiners that expand and contract and wear down. The damage will usually be on the gutter and will have to be patched.

4. Downspouts

Any event, from high winds to earthquakes, can shake a downspout connection loose. If your gutter disconnects from the downspout then water will fall freely to your foundation and cause leaks, mold, and erosion. Fortunately, a simple reattachment or downspout replacement is all that’s needed.

5. Damage

Did something fall on or lean against your gutters? They are thin metal to it does’t take too much pressure before they warp and bend out of shape. Sometimes they can be bent back. But usually the best repair is to replace that damaged gutter section.

6. Poor Pitch Angle

Gutters are meant to have a slope towards the downspout, about 1/8 or 1/16 inch per foot, to keep water flowing. If water is pooling in your gutters when there is no blockage, your gutters are probably not angled correctly. This could have happened during a poorly done gutter installation or can be the result of house settling. Could also be from damage or some sort. It’s an important problem to address because pooling water can lead to corrosion. It’s also a breeding ground for mosquitoes.

Gutter pitch adjustment is delicate work as you must maintain a precise angle, in a straight line, over long stretches of gutter. This repair is best done by a gutter repair professional.
